RED YEAST RICE CUTS BLOOD CHOLESTERROL
In a study conducted in China, an extract of the red yeast fermented on rice, which is sold as a dietary supplement called Cholestin in the United Stated, reduced blood cholesterol by nearly 26% in elderly patients after 8 weeks of treatment. Another study conducted at Tufts University Medical School in Boston found that after 8 weeks of Cholestin, individuals had a 16.4 % drop in blood cholesterol. Both studies were funded by harmanex, a Simi Valley, California, company that imports Chinese red yeast to the U.S. The research was presented to the American Heart Assn. 39th Annual Conference on Cardiovascular Disease Epidemiology abd prevention.
